The most controversial issue of this year is the “triple talaq” which had its verdict expected from the Supreme Court. Today is the day when Supreme Court announced its verdict on triple talaq, and dubbed the practise as “void” and “illegal”.

The court struck down the custom declaring it as “unconstitutional” via a split decision by 3:2 and stated that, this ritual is against the basic tenets of Quran.

The Chief Justice JS Khehar, who is the head of the five-judge bench, reserved the judgement on 18th May, after a long-drawn-out and extensive hearing of six days, which commenced on 11th May.

During the hearing, the court considered whether the practice of triple talaq is fundamental to religion among Muslims.

So today, 22md August, the historic verdict on the long standing practise of triple talaq has seen its dusk of the day calling it invalid.
