More than 500 slums dwellers living near Kopar and Dombivali hit the Railway station, had Rail Roko Andolan and protested against the Slum Demolition on Thursday at around 12.34 pm. The rail services of Central Railways was disrupted and delayed for 30 minutes due to the protest.
The slum dwellers living near the railway tracks, is owned by the Government and the people are living illegally and constructing house. The authorites had decided to demolish several slums which are illegally constructed on the lands of the government.
On Tuesday, the GRP officials had informed the slum dwellers to vacate the place as the authorities are on way for demolition. More than 500 residents living illegally gathered near the tracks, had Rail Roko Andolan and protested against the slum demolition at 12.34 pm.
The trains services disrupted and delayed for 30 minutes due to the protest. Seeing the crowd, the GRP convince the people and said no demolition will be carried out today after which the residents called off their protest.
The delay in trains had left commuters frustrated at Dombivali Station. Many people took the bus, OLA taxi to reach their destination.
Akanksha Chauhan (22), resident of Dombivali said, I reached station at 1.45 and was shocked to see the many commuters stranded at station waiting for the train. Then I heard announcement done about the delay of the train. I waited nearly 30 minutes for the train and decided to go home.
