Mumbai: Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt allegedly received an extortion call from an unidentified person and demanded Rs 50 lakh from Bhatt. He also threatened to kill Alia if his demand is not fulfilled, police said today.

Mahesh Bhatt immediately approached to the police and lodged a complaint at Juhu Police Station and the Anti-extortion cell of Mumbai Crime Branch. Police learned that caller has been  detained in Uttar Pradesh in a joint operation launched  by Uttar Pradesh police and Maharashtra Police and are investigating the matter.

According to the police, on February 26, an unidentified caller has shared his bank details via WhatsApp and sent messages to Mhaesh Bhatt and extorted Rs 50 lakh. He also threatened to kill Alia if his demanded is not fulfilled.

Speaking with Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe said, ‘We learnt that the caller is from Uttar Pradesh and has been detained in a joint operation of Uttar Pradesh Police and Mumbai Police. The anti-extortion cell is investigating the offence.

Accused Sandeep Sahu arrested from Uttar Pradesh

The accused has been identified as Sandeep Sahu who extorted money in the name of Bablu Shrivastav. Bablu Shrivastav is Gangster mafia in Gazipur of Uttar Pradesh. and is currently in Bareli jail.

Mahesh Bhatt took on the twitter and wrote, “A bolt from the blue in the form of an extortion call & threat to my family was nipped in the bud by the MH & UP police in tandem.Gratitude!”

This is not the first time that the Filmaker had received the threat calls. In September 7, 2007, his daughter Pooja Bhatt and brother Mukesh received threat calls from a person identifying himself as fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari. In January 2013, an unidentified man sent obscene and threatening calls to Actress turned filmaker Pooja Bhatt.

Mahesh Bhatt daughter Alia’s Bhatt -Badrinath Ki Dulhania – is set to release in theatres on March 10. The film has been directed by Shashank Khaitan and is produced by Karan Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.
