Newly appointed Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is on a two-days visit to Jammu and Kashmir and arrived today arrived at the location today.
Her agenda is to review the security situation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Valley and Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh region. She is accompanied by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, on her maiden visit to the state.
They straightaway headed to Kupwara sector in north Kashmir for an on-ground assessment of the situation along the LoC. It is learnt that senior army officials would brief the defence minister about the overall situation in the Valley, including counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations, upon her return from Kupwara.
Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to meet Governor N N Vohra and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti later in the day. Tomorrow she is scheduled to visit Ladakh region where she would take stock of the situation along the LAC.
Either a visit to Siachen Base Camp or an aerial tour of the glacier, the highest battlefield in the world, might be on defence minister’s itinerary.
