In an extortion case, underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s younger brother Iqbal Kaskar has been arrested from his Mumbai residence by Thane police. The arrests were made by former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, who was reinstated last month and was made a senior inspector of the AEC in Thane.
The Thane Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) arrested Iqbal Kaskar along with two others on Monday evening. Kaskar was detained on a complaint of extortion lodged by a Thane-based builder at the Kasarvadavali police station.
It is informed that Kaskar had illegally taken four houses from the builder and had been demanding more. An official said, “The builder had approached Kaskar in the past to settle a dispute pertaining to a plot, in lieu of which he demanded four houses from the builder, which he obliged. However, when Kaskar recently asked for one more property, the builder approached the Thane police and lodged a complaint,” said an officer, adding: “We are interrogating the accused and more arrests are likely in the case.”
It is also learnt that the police were exploring the possibility of invoking provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case. Acting on the builder’s complaint, a team headed by Pradeep Sharma raided Gordon Hall apartment in South Mumbai’s Nagpada.
Before taking Kaskar into custody, a QRT cordoned off the building in Nagpada, allegedly a stronghold of the D-gang.
Kaskar had shifted to the apartment belonging to his late sister, Haseena Parkar, after the recent building collapse in Bhendi Bazar. Kaskar used to stay in the neighbouring Damarwala building and vacated it hours after the collapse and late Haseena Parkar too used to live in the Damarwala building.
On September 7, Iqbal Kaskar was asked to vacate two dilapidated buildings which the authorities said was acquired illegally. The buildings that he was asked to vacate were Damarwala Building at Pakmodia Street in Bhendi Bazaar and Shabnam Guest House in JJ Marg area, both in south Mumbai.
A notice under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976 or SAFEMA Act had been pasted outside the Damarwala building, asking the occupants to vacate it. A similar notice was also put up at Shabnam Guest House located in JJ Marg area. Kaskar was arrested in an extortion case in February 2015 and granted bail. A real estate agent, Mohammed Salim Shaikh, filed a complaint alleging that Kaskar and his men assaulted him and demanded Rs 3 lakh.
Back in 2003, he was deported to India from the UAE in connection to a murder and the Sara Sahara illegal construction case. Later he was acquitted from both the charges in 2007. Yet again, Iqbal Kaskar was arrested for extortion case in February 2015, but was granted bail.
