Crime Branch of the city police has arrested 40-year-old man for allegedly pushing counterfeit currency notes while trying to exchange the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination. The accused has been remanded in the police custody.

According to sources, the accused has been identified as Venkateshwar Rao (40) who is married to a Railway Police constable posted at Dadar. They live at the Dadar railway police quarters.

Officials of the crime branch of the city police said that a search of his house yielded Rs79,000 in fake notes. Rao, a manufacturer of boxes used to pack fruits, allegedly pumped the fakes into circulation at APMC market in Vashi.

He has told the police that he got the fakes from a Bangladeshi identified as Mohammed Shaikh who is in jail.
