Palghar: On Sunday, around 36 party workers of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested by the Tulinj Police in Nalasopara, for disrupting the 6th National Vasai-Virar Mayor’s Marathon and protesting against alleged corruption in the civic body.

The party workers had already informed the event organisers and the police about the protest after which Marathon organised by Bahujan Vikas Agadhi had asked police protection and wanted the Marathon to go on smooth way as many people from the state had come and took part in Marathon.

The MNS said corruption under the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) was rampant and unchecked. “Residents of Vasai and Virar pay taxes too. Then why is special treatment being given only to residents who live along the marathon route? The marathon route has been freshly-tarred, while the rest of the city’s roads are neglected,” said John Peter, a district leader of the MNS in Palghar,

A source said the police warned the party not to stage the protest, but it ignored their warnings. The incident took in the morning near police station. The police had a lathi-charge on party workers to control the situation.

The police then arrested 36 workers and booked them under section 135 of Bombay Police Act and under 188 of the Indian Penal Code. Later the party workers were released on bail, said a police official from Tulinj Police Station.
